Born on 4 September 1634 at Hackney, Middlesex, to London merchant Robert South. Educated at Westminster School, matriculated from Christ Church College, Oxford 1651; B.A. 1654-5; M.A. 1657. Incorporated at Cambridge and served as public orator a 1660-1677; BD and DD 1663; prebendary of Westminster, 1663; canon of Christ Church 1670-1677. Rector of Llanrhaidr-in-Mochnant, county Denbigh 1667, chaplain to James, duke of York 1667, rector of Islip, Oxfordshire, 1678-1717; chaplain-in-ordinary to Charles II. His high church sympathies prevented him attaining a bishopric following the accession of William III. He died on 8 July 1716.
