Other note

Born around 1660 in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire to Robert Fleming, who was minister there, and his wife, Christian. Robert Fleming senior was ejected in 1662 and relocated to Edinburgh. Robert Fleming junior began his education there under his uncle John Sinclair at Ormiston. The family relocated to Rotterdam in 1677 when Robert's father was made minister of the Scots Church there; ordained by his father there in 1688. Returned to England that year to become chaplain to a private family at Soham, Cambridgeshire. Remained there until 1692, when he returned to the Netherlands as minister of the English Presbyterian Church in Leiden. Admitted to the university there. Succeeded his father as minister in Rotterdam in 1695. In 1698, partly at wish of William III, he returned to England as minister of the Scots church, Founders Hall, Lothbury, London, a post which he held until his death. Appointed Tuesday lecturer at Salters' Hall in 1701. Died in London 21 May 1716.
