Ken, Thomas (1637-07-01 - 1711-03-19)

Son of Thomas Ken (d. 1651), attorney of Furnival's Inn, and clerk of assize in Glamorgan, Radnorshire, and Brecon, Wales. Elected scholar of Winchester College, Oxford, 1651; elected to New College, Oxford, 1656. Graduated BA 1661 and proceeded to MA 1664. Created BD 1678 and DD 1679. Lector in logic, and possibly mathematics, at New College, 1661-1662. Rector of Little Easton, Essex, 1663-1665. Moved to Winchester and became Bishop George Morley's chaplain,1665. Elected fellow of Winchester College, Oxford, 1666. Instituted at the rectory of Brightstone by Bishop Morley 1667, where he stayed until 1669. Rector of East Woodhay, Hampshire, 1669-1672. Prebendary of Winchester Cathedral, 1669-1685. Appointed chaplain to Princess Mary, wife of future King William III, at The Hague in 1679, and then a chaplain-in-ordinary to King Charles II in 1680. Sent to Tangier as senior chaplain of the fleet, 1683-1684. Bishop of Bath and Wells 1685-1691 (suspended as bishop in 1689 when he refused the oath to William and Mary, but was not deprived until 1691). Lived in Longleat, Wiltshire, as a nonjuror until his death in 1711.
