Born on September 12 1671 at Lyons, near Braintree, Essex. Third son of Sir John Dawes, first baronet, and his wife Christian, daughter and heir of William Lyons. Educated at Merchant Taylor's School, London from September 1680. Admitted to St. John's College, Oxford, 1687. Migrated to St. Catherine's College, Cambridge, in 1689. Became third baronet in 1690. Married Frances D’Arcy of Branstead Lodge, Essex, in 1692. Became a fellow and MA at St. Catherine's in 1695. Appointed DD by royal mandate in 1696. Master of St. Catherine's College, 1697-1714. Vice-chancellor of Cambridge, 1698-99. Chaplain-in-ordinary to William III, 1697-1702. Prebendary of Worcester Cathedral, 1697-1708. Became rector, then dean of Bocking, Essex, 1699. Appointed to chaplain-in-ordinary to Queen Anne in 1702. Appointed Bishop of Chester in 1708. Appointed Archbishop of York in 1714. Was a moderate Tory throughout his entire life. Died in London on April 30, 1724.
