Born 24 June 1662 in Worsley, Lancashire. Son of William Tong, chapman. Entered Richard Frankland's academy at Natland, Westmorland, in March 1681. Licensed as a preacher in 1685, and began to preach in Shropshire that same year. Served as chaplain for the families of Thomas Corbet in Stanwardine, Shropshire and of Rowland Hunt in Boreatton, Shropshire for two years. Sometimes preached in the chapel of Cockshut, Shropshire until he was threatened with prosecution. Preached publicly during 1687, spending time in Chester, Cheshire and Wrexham, Denbighshire. Preacher at Knutsford, Cheshire, where he helped establish a new meeting, 1687-1690. Ordained at Warrington, Buckinghamshire on 4 November 1687. Co-pastor at Coventry with Thomas Showell (later with Joshua Oldfield and Matthew Warren), 1690-1702. Frequently traveled to and preached in towns outside of Coventry. Tutor at Coventry Academy with Joshua Oldfield, ca. 1693-1699. Head of Coventry Academy, 1699-1702. Presbyterian pastor of Salters' Hall, London, 1702-1727. One of the Tuesday morning lecturers at Salters' Hall, 1705-1727. Served on the Presbyterian Fund board from 1703 until his death. Died in London on 21 March, 1727.
