Stanhope, George (1660-03-05 - 1728-03-18)

Born in Hartshorne, Derbyshire on 5 March 1660. Son of the local rector Thomas Stanhope, who was also vicar or St. Margaret's, Leicester, and chaplain to the earls of Chesterfield and Clare. Began his education at Uppingham School, Rutland until 1667. Entered Eton College in 1667. Entered King's College, Cambridge, in 1677. Fellow of King’s College, 1680-. Awarded BA in 1682; MA in 1685. Preacher at Therfield, Hertfordshire, 1684. Chaplain to the earl of Dartmouth and tutor to his son. Vicar of Quy (Quoi), Cambridgeshire, 1687-88. Vice-proctor of King’s College, 1688. Rector of Tewin, Hertfordshire, 1689-1702. Vicar of Lewisham, Kent, 1689-1728. Chaplain-in-ordinary to William and Mary, and then to Queen Anne and to George I, 1694-1718. Incorporated at Oxford in 1696; DD in 1697. Lecturer at St Nicholas, Deptford, Kent, 1698. Boyle lecturer, 1701-1702. Vicar of St. Nicholas, Deptford, 1702-1728. Dean of Canterbury, 1704-1728. Married twice: first, to Olivia Cotton of Beresford, Stafford (d. 1707) with whom he had six children; second, to Anne Parker (d. 1730) ca. 1709. Tuesday lecturer at St. Lawrence Jewry, 1702-1708. Elected prolocutor of the lower house of Convocation in 1714 and twice more, including in 1717. Stanhope was a noted preacher and a committed high churchman and a moderate Tory. Died on March 18, 1728 at Lewisham.
