Born in 1578 in Haverhill, Essex to John Ward, minister there. Admitted sizar at Emmanuel in 1596. BA 1599/1600; MA 1603. Married a certain Elizabeth sometime before 1606, when they had a child. Studied law at Lincoln's Inn in 1607, before travelling on the continent. Studied under David Pareus, professor of theology at Heidelberg. During his travels, he seems to have had a change of heart in his career path and was ordained in 1618. Chaplain to the British merchants of Elbing, 1620-1624. Returned to England as curate of St James, Piccadilly, London in 1626. Suspended there in 1633 by Archbishop Laud on account of his puritan views. Travelled to New England the following year and was pastor of Ipswich, Massachusetts, 1634-1639. Joined John Cotton of Boston in framing code of laws in New England. Appointed member of the Committee for revising the laws of Massachusetts, 1645. Returned to England in 1647. Rector of Shenfield, Essex, 1648-52. Perhaps one of six preachers at Canterbury, 1647. Died October 1652.
