Tuckney, Anthony (1599-09-22 - 1670-02-01)

Born on 22 September Kirton, Lincolnshire to William Tuckney, vicar there. Scholar at Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1613. BA, 1617; fellow, 1619; MA, 1620; BD,1627. Chaplain to Theophilus Clinton, fourth early of Lincoln, around 1617-1619. Succeeded John Cotton as vicar at Boston in 1633. Around this time he married Mary, mother of his only son. She died 26 October 1633, after which he married Elizabeth, of whom nothing is known. Elected in November 1640 to the lower house of convocation as clerk for Lincoln diocese. Preached a sermon before the House of Commons 30 August 1643 published as The Balm of Gilead for the Wounds of England (1654). At this time, he relocated relocated to London as rector of St Michael-le-Querne, Paternoster Row. Active member of the Westminster Assembly. Master of Emmanuel College, 1645-1653, master of St John's College, 1653-1661. DD in 1649. Regius Professor of Divinity, 1656-1661. Pressured by Charles II, he resigned from Cambridge posts in 1661. Died of scurvy and jaundice in February 1670; buried at St Andrew Undershaft 1 March.
