Baptized 10 October 1630 at Haugh End, Sowerby, Halifax, Yorkshire. Son of Mary and Robert Tillotson, clothier. Admitted pensioner to Clare College, Cambridge in 1647. Graduated BA, 1650; MA, 1654; Fellow, 1651. Left Cambridge for London 1656/7 to serve as chaplain to Edmund Prideaux, Oliver Cromwell's attorney general, and tutor of Prideaux's son. Increasingly moved away from congregationalism of his youth to episcopalianism. Took part in the Savoy conference in 1661. Around this time received episcopal ordination by Thomas Sydserf, bishop of Galloway. Curate of Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, 1661-2. Occasional lecturer at St Lawrence Jewry, 1662; elected to Tuesday lectureship the following year. Rector of Ketton, 1663-4. Preacher at Lincoln's Inn, 1663. Proceeded DD in 1666. Appointed one of Charles II's chaplains in 1667. Prebend at Canterbury, 1670-2; dean,1672-89. Prebendary and residentiary canon of St Paul's, 1675-8. Favoured by William III who made chaplain upon his accession, then clerk of the closet. Encouraged the King to make efforts to reconcile with nonconformists. Reluctantly accepted his appointment as Archbishop of Canterbury by the King in 1690. Died 22 November 1694.
