Likely born in Oxford around 1650 to Thomas Goodwin, minister, and his wife Mary Hammond. There is little information about his education except that he was educated in England and the Netherlands. Joined Theophilus Dorrington, James Lambert and John Shower for evening lectures at Exchange Alley coffee house in 1678. In 1683, he embarked on a European tour at the invitation of Sir Samuel Barnardiston, accompanying his nephew Samuel. Returned in 1684 to assist Stephen Lobb at Fetter Lane meeting house, London. He continued there, but after 1690, also ran an academy and congregational church in Pinner, Middlesex. From 1683 on, he edited his father's work and engaged in religious polemics, helping establish his father's reputation as a founder of congregationalism. Died in January or February 1708.
