Haywood, William (1600-03-25 - 1663-07-14)

Born to a cooper in Bristol in 1599 or 1600, he matriculated from St John's College, Oxford in 1616. BA, 1620; MA, 1624; BD, 1630. Appointed chaplain to William Laud, bishop of London in 1631; subsequently prebend of St Paul's, London, and rector of Laindon, Essex later that year. DD in 1636 and rector of St Giles-in-the-Fields, London. Left Laud's service in 1637 to become royal chaplain. Canon of Westminster in 1638. Sequestered in 1647 and fled to Oxford to join royalist forces, and then moved to the Isle of Wight to attend the king imprisoned there. Kept a school in Calne, Wiltshire during the 1650s. Restored to his livings in 1660 and made chaplain to Charles II. Several of his sermons were published, exhibiting his strong royalist sympathies such as A Sermon Tending to Peace (1648) and A Sermon Dissuading from Obloquie Against Governours (1663). Was buried at Westminster Abbey 17 July 1663.
