Samuel Hawes of London was admitted pensioner of Peterhouse College, Cambridge in 1645; he graduated B.A. in 1649/50 and M.A. in 1655. He was one of three nonjuring bishops, along with Nathaniel Spinckes and Jeremy Collier, who were consecrated by fellow nonjuring bishop George Hickes on May 29, 1713. Little is recorded about Hawes himself. The ODNB entry for George Hickes (Article: 13203) mentions the appointment of Samuel Hawes as bishop, but he does not appear to have his own entry on ODNB, CCEd, or SI. The Dictionary of Religion (ed. William Benham, 1887) notes that Hawes was a former clergyman in the diocese of Lincoln, although the parish within which he served is not mentioned.
