Born in All Hallows Barking, parish, London around 1555 to Thomas Andrewes, a moderately wealthy mariner. B.A. (1574/5), M.A. (1578), B.D. (1585) from Pembroke College, Oxford, and fellow there beginning in 1576. Master of Pembroke, 1589-1605. Vicar of St Giles Cripplegate, London, 1589-1605. Prebendary at St Paul's beginning in 1589. Chaplain to Queen Elizabeth I. Lord Prebendary of Westminster beginning in 1597, and dean of Westminster, 1601-1605. Bishop of Chichester, 1605-1609, and lord almoner beginning in this period. Bishop of Ely, 1609-1618. Bishop of Winchester and Dean of the Chapel Royal from 1619 until his death in 1626.
