Stennett, Joseph (1663-03-25 - 1713-07-11)

Joseph Stennett was born at Abingdon, Berkshire to the Seventh Day Baptist physician Edward Stennett (1627/8-1705) and his wife Mary (bap. c.1626). He was educated at Wallingford grammar school, taking up a position as a schoolmaster in London in 1685. The following year he joined the Seventh Day Baptist congregation at Pinners’ Hall, Old Broad Street, where his father assisted in the ministry. He married Susanna Guill (Gill) in 1688. He lectured occasionally to the Seventh Day Baptist congregation at Devonshire Square, London, and was ordained pastor at Pinners’ Hall in 1690. He served as Sunday lecturer to the General Baptist congregation at Paul’s Alley, Barbican, although the congregation protested against his Calvinist sermons in 1700. His “Works” was published in 1732, consisting of sermons, hymns and poetry. Stennett died on 11 July 1714 in Knaphill, Bucks. and was buried in Hughenden churchyard. He was survived by Susanna and four of their children.
