Goade (Goad), Thomas (1576-03-25 - 1638-08-08)

Thomas Goade (Goad) was the son of Roger Goad (1538-1610), provost of King’s College, Cambridge, and Katherine or Katharine (bap.1554). He was a commensal and then king’s scholar at Eton College between 1588 and 1592; he entered King’s College as a scholar in 1592 and was made fellow in 1593, graduating B.A. in 1596 and proceeding M.A. in 1600. He was ordained as a priest in 1606 and proceeded B.D. in 1607. He served as bursar of King’s from 1609 and dean of divinity in 1611. He resigned his King’s fellowship in 1611 and was presented to the rectory of Milton, Cambridge, becoming chaplain to the archbishop of Canterbury the same year. He proceeded D.D. in 1615 and was admitted to Gray’s Inn the following year. He was made rector of Merstham, Surrey in 1617 and precentor of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London and rector of Hadleigh, Suffolk in 1618. Goade was made prebendary of Wolverhampton in 1620 and prebendary of Winchester the following year. He was involved in anti-Arminian movements during the 1620s and published works in this vein, as well as anti-recusant tracts. He was made rector of Black Notley, Essex in 1623 and co-dean of Bocking with John Barkham in 1633. He became an ecclesiastical commissioner in 1633 and prebendary of Canterbury in 1636. Goade died at Hadleigh on 8 August 1638 and was buried in the chancel. He is not known to have married or to have had children.
