Bates matriculated at New Inn Hall, Oxford in 1641, transferred to Queen's College, and graduated B.A. in 1645. M.A. from Queen's (1648). Vicar of Tottenham, Middlesex beginning in 1649. Thereafter he was vicar of St Dunstan in the West, London. A proponent of the Restoration, Bates became chaplain to King Charles II and D.D. from Cambridge in 1660. Nevertheless, he was ejected from St Dunstan for refusing to adopt the Book of Common Prayer. Thereafter he continued to preach and was licensed as a Presbyterian in 1672. By 1694 he was a certified preacher at a meeting-house in Hackney.
