Cotton Mather was born on 12 February 1663 in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Increase Mather (1639-1723). He attended Harvard College at the age of twelve. He graduated B.A. in 1678 and proceeded M.A. in 1681. Mather gave his first sermon in August 1680 at his father's church. He was formally ordained in 1685. Mather was also interested in science, and was a member of the Royal Society of London. He published widely; his magnum opus is Magnalia Christi Americana (London, 1702). In 1710, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Glasgow University. Cotton Mather died on 13 February 1728 at Boston.
