Love, Richard (1596-12-26 - 1661-02-01)

Richard Love was born in Great St Mary’s parish, Cambridge, to Richard Love (d.1605), apothecary, and his wife Margaret. He matriculated from King’s College, Cambridge in 1611, migrating to Clare College whence he graduated B.A. in 1615 and proceeded M.A. in 1618. He was ordained deacon and priest in 1624, served as a university taxor from 1625-6, and senior proctor in 1628. Around the summer of 1628 he was made chaplain in ordinary to Charles I, and soon after was presented to the living of Eckington in 1629. He proceeded D.D. in 1631 and became a prebendary in Lichfield Cathedral the same year. He was made master of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge in 1632 and vice-chancellor of the university the following year. During the civil war, Love likely took the solemn league and covenant and avoided ejection. He was made Lady Margaret professor of divinity in 1649 and maintained his prebend despite his Anglican views. He was suspended from his professorship when he petitioned the engagement in 1650, but soon found a way to satisfy it and retain his preferments. Love died early February 1661 and was buried in his college chapel. He was survived by his wife Grace (m. c.1632), with whom he had six children: Anne (b.1633), Grace (b.1635), Richard (b.1638), Thomas (b.16438), Henry (b. and d. 1640), and John (d.1648)
