After graduating BA from Queen's College, Cambridge (later followed by MA in 1616), he was appointed deacon of Peterborough in 1610, then priest in 1612. In the mid-1630s he became lecturer at St Andrew, Plymouth where he remained until removed from that post in 1643 for refusing to take the oath of solemn league and covenant. After eventually taking this oath, he became lecturer at St Antholin, and then rector at St Martin Outwich, London.
