Born in 1683, son of Thomas Rice of Newcastle, County Cardigan, Wales. Matriculated at Jesus College, Oxford, 13th March 1699/1700 aged seventeen. Received his BA from Magdalen Hall, Oxford 16th March 1703/4. In 1704 returned to Cardiganshire to take up a curacy. Ordained Priest 3rd June 1705 and appointed that year as missionary at St John’s, Newfoundland. Later relocated to serve as chaplain to the English garrison at Placentia. The exact year of this transfer remains uncertain; Rice was still in St John’s in 1712 and remained in Placentia until 1725. Early 1725 he was appointed Rector of North Cray, Kent, England. Died September 1728.
