Other note

Served as regent of Marischal College starting in 1653. In 1659 he was elected minister of the East Parish of Aberdeen. He was temporarily deprived of his charge after his initial refusal to subscribe to the oath of allegiance, but later accepted it and was restored to his position by the Scottish Privy Council. However, in 1681 his refusal to take the Scottish Test Act led to his dismissal again. He did not to take up another post until toleration in 1688. Thereafter, he served in Kilwinning parish, Ayrshire, minister at Tron Kirk, Edinburgh, and professor of divinity at Edinburgh University.
