Henry Edes, son of John Edes, matriculated from Queens' College, Cambridge in 1646 and migrated to Magdalen Hall, Oxford, whence he graduated B.A. in 1648/9. He proceeded M.A. in 1651 and D.D. in 1669; he was also a fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford. He was ordained priest in 1651 and was licensed to preach in Winchester in 1662. Edes was made rector of Chinnor, Oxfordshire in 1660, vicar of Amport, Hampshire in 1661, canon of Chichester Cathedral in 1662, rector of Felpham, Sussex in 1670, and precentor of Chichester in 1696. As a supporter of the Duke of Monmouth during the Monmouth Rebellion, Edes was briefly imprisoned in 1685. At some point in his life he served as chaplain to the king and as rector of Fittleton, Wiltshire. He married Mary Hancock in 1686; it is unknown whether they had any children. Edes died on 20 May 1703 and was buried in Chichester Cathedral.
