Thomas Gataker was born on 4 September 1574 at Lombard Street, London. He was the son of Thomas Gatacre (1531/2-1593), rector of St Edmund the King, Lombard Street. He graduated B.A. from St John's College, Cambridge in 1594, proceeding M.A. in 1597. He also held a Fellowship at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge from 1596 until 1600. In 1601, he preached at Lincoln's Inn. Gataker was awarded the degree of B.D. from Sidney Sussex College in 1604. He became rector of Rotherhithe in 1611, a post which he held until his death on 27 July 1654. During his lifetime, he published many sermons.
