The exact date of birth of George Closse (Close) is unknown. He matriculated as sizar at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1571, and was awarded the degree of M.A. in 1579. In the 1580s, he also preached at St Magnus the Martyr in London. In 1591, he became incumbent at Bradford, Devon. Closse was deprived in 1615, having been accused, among other things, of fathering a child outside of marriage. He was subsequently held at the Fleet prison for the following two years.
