Durant attended Exeter College, Oxford, but may not have graduated. From 1645 he was lecturer at All Saints and St. Nicholas in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and from 1647 at St. John's. By 1656 he was also pastor of the Congregational Church in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, but was ejected from All Saints in 1661. In 1672, he was licensed to preach at Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
