Precise date of birth unknown, but Lany was admitted to Pembroke College, Cambridge in 1682 at age 16. B.A. (1686/7) and M.A. (1690) from Pembroke. Fellow there beginning in 1688, and master from 1707 until his death in 1728. Became D.D. in 1707. Vice-Chancellor of Cambridge, 1707-1708. Professor of Divinity at Gresham College, 1691-1728. Vicar of Chrishall, Essex, 1719-1720. Rector of Salle, Norfolk, 1720-1725, and of Great Cressingham, Norfolk, 1725-1728. Chaplain to William III. Fellow of the Royal Society of London.
