Charles Lewis Shipley was born at Pontefract, Yorkshire, in April 1756. He matriculated at St Catharine's College, Cambridge, in Easter 1775 and took the degree of M. A. in 1781. After his ordination, he was appointed Lecturer of St Philip's Church in Birmingham. He was Head Master of the Free Grammar School at Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, 1788-1799. In 1799, he was presented to the vicarage of Grimley and Hallowe in the county and diocese of Worcester. A letter dated 13 March 1794, from Shipley to Rev. Mark Noble, is held at the Bodleian Library (MS. Eng. misc. d. 156, fol. 33). Shipley died in 1820.
