Shute, Josias (1588-03-25 - 1643-06-13)

Josias Shute was baptised on 11 August 1588 in Giggleswick, Yorkshire. He was the son of Christopher Shute (d. 1626), vicar of Giggleswick, and his wife, Katherine Newhouse. In 1602, he matriculated from Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating B.A. in 1605 and proceeding M.A. in 1609. He was ordained priest on 3 June 1610 and became rector of St Mary Woolnoth, London, on 30 November 1611 until his ejection in 1643. He also held a post as chaplain to the East India Company in 1632, and was appointed archdeacon of Colchester in April 1642. He died on 13 June 1643 and was buried at St Mary Woolnoth the following day, where Ephraim Udall preached his funeral sermon. Literary tributes include Alexander Brome, 'Upon the Death of that Reverend and learned Divine Mr. Josias Shute' (Alexander Brome, Songs and other Poems, 3rd edn (London, 1668), pp. 251-253). His publications, all printed posthumously, include Divine Cordials, delivered in Ten Sermons (London, 1644), Judgement and Mercy (London, 1645), and Sarah and Hagar (London, 1649), the latter of which was the sole authorized edition of any of Shute's sermons, featuring an engraving of the preacher by William Marshall.
