The exact date of birth of John Hayward is unknown. Originally from Walsingham, Norfolk, he matriculated pensioner from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1572, graduating B.A. in 1578/9. In 1594, he became rector of St Mary Woolchurch, London, and in 1604, he was also instituted to the rectory of Stepney. In 1601, he delivered a sermon at Paul's Cross, condeming the Essex Rebellion. Hayward held both his clerical posts until his death; he was buried on 15 October 1618.
