Born in Wigan, Lancashire. Precise date of birth unknown, but he was admitted to Peterhouse, Cambridge at the age of 16 on 14 June 1639. Graduated BA in 1642, MA in 1651. and D.D, in 1665. Ordained as a deacon and priest 25 July 1646. Vicar at St John the Baptist, Halifax, 1662-1689. Preacher throughout the diocese of York. Rector at Thornton in Craven, Yorkshire in 1668. Prebend of Grindal at York Minster, 1670-1689. Master at St John the Baptist Hospital, Ripon 1672-1689, and Master of St Mary Magdalene Hospital 1672-1711. Held the Prebend of Oxton, First Part at Southwell Minister from 1675 to 1689. Father of Gibert (b. 1683), Samuel (b. 1679), Thomas (b. 1674) and William (b. 1674).
