Baptized on 16 September 1633 in Bolton, Lancashire. Matriculated from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1648 and earned a BA in 1652. Vicar of Illingworth, Yorkshire beginning in 1652, and of Ormskirk, Lancashire from 1656 until he was ejected in 1662. Licensed to preach as a Presbyterian in 1672, whereafter he preached at Bickerstaffe and Scarisbrick, both in Lancashire.
