Born ca. 1556 in Cambridgeshire, possibly at Ely. Matriculated from Queens' College, Cambridge in 1578; migrated to St John's College, 1579; BA, 1582; MA and ordination as priest in 1585; DD, 1598. Vicar of Dullingham, Cambridgeshire, 1591-1598; vicar of Bovey Tracy, 1596-1603; lecturer at Christchurch, Newgate Street, London, 1605; rector of St Margaret Pattens, Billingsgate Ward, 1608. Appointed chaplain to James I ca. 1603. Preached his most famous sermon at St Paul's 5 August 1607 commemorating the Gowrie conspiracy. This sermon was printed as Jacob's Great Day of Trouble and Deliverance in 1610. Died 1 August 1609 in Scotland, sent there by James to advocate for episcopacy before the Scottish parliament.
