Born sometime in 1609/10. B.A. (1637) from Trinity College Dublin. Incorporated M.A. at Trinity College, Oxford in 1637. Minister at Clonpriest, County Cork shortly thereafter. Dean of Cloyne in 1640. Chaplain and eventually chaplain-general in the army during the Confederate Wars, based in Munster. Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, 1660-1663. Archbishop of Dublin, 1663-1679. Lord Chancellor of Ireland, 1665-1686. One of three men jointly appointed lord justice of Ireland on three separate occasions, another being Arthur Forbes. Archbishop of Armagh from 1679 until his death in 1702.
