Born in Turton, Lancashire the son of Francis Isherwood and brother of John Isherwood. Baptised at Bolton on 28 August 1631. Schooled at Rivinton and admitted at the age of 16 to Christ's College, Cambridge on 11 June 1647. He was ordained as a Presbyterian minister of Blackrod, Lancashire on 12 April 1654 and remained there until 1656, after which he conformed. He was the curate of Bradshaw, Lancashire 1662-1664, and vicar of Eccles, Lancashire from 1671 until he died on 17 February 1678. Oliver Heywood recorded his death in his diaries: "I could not but reflect on my old schoolfellow, Mr. Thomas Isherwood, vicar of Eccles, that had been drinking with some gentlemen, returning home fell off his horse, was drowned in a ditch that scarce covered all his head" (Diaries, iii, 331).
