David Robinson
ODNB; CCEd (ID: 68768)
The son of clothiers Lawrence Edes and Alice James. Baptized at Newport, Isle of Wight on 23 January 1554. Elected student of Christ Church, Oxford in 1571. BA in 1574; MA, 1578; proctor, 1583; BD, 1584; canon, 1586; DD, 1589. Ordained in 1582, he was rector of Freshwater, Isle of Wight, 1587-1604, and of Upton-upon-Severn, Worcestershire in 1598. He married Margaret, daughter of the bishop of Hereford, Herbert Westfaling, a marriage which no doubt contributed to Eedes' advancement to the prebendary of Preston in Hereford cathedral in 1590 and subsequent appointment as cathedral treasurer in 1596. Royal chaplain to Elizabeth I and James I. His court connections led to his appointment as treasurer of Christ Church in 1596 and dean of Worcester in 1597 with the support of the Earl of Essex. One of the scholars appointed to produce a new translation of the English bible, but died on 19 November 1604 before he could take the up work.
