Poet, essayist, and Church of Ireland minister. Precise date of birth unknown, but he was baptized on 14 September 1679. B.A. (1697) and M.A. (1700) from Trinity College Dubiln. Ordained as a deacon in 1700 and as a priest in 1704. Minor canon of St Patrick's, Dublin beginning in 1704. Archdeacon of Clogher, County Tyrone beginning in 1706. B.D. and D.D. from the University of Dublin in 1712. Prebend of Dunlavin, County Wicklow beginning in 1713. Vicar of Finglas, County Dublin beginning in 1716. Parnell spent much time in London in the circle of Jonathan Swift.
