Son of Thomas Smith (Smyth). Matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford on 7 March 1262/3 at the age of 18. He perhaps gained B.D. from Lincoln College, Oxford on 3 April 1633. He gained a doctorate of divinity on 3 July 1661. He was Navy chaplain to Admiral Henry, the Earl of Holland and domestic chaplain to the Earl of Cleveland. He was rector of Wainfleet All Saints, Lincolnshire in 1634, rector of King's-Nympton, Devon from 1639 to 1662, archdeacon of Barnstaple, Devon from 1660 to 1662, and canon of Exeter Cathedral in 1662, when he was also made a rector of Alphington. in 1664 he was made rector of Exminster, Devon until he died on June 22 1667.
