Son of Thomas Shelmerdine, vicar of Crich, Derbyshire. He attended school in Repton, Derbyshire and then matriculated at Christ's College, Cambridge in 1652, gaining his BA in 1655/6 and MA in 1659. He was ordained at Wirksworth, and became chaplain to Colonel Greet at Moseley, Worcestershire. He was a minister of Barrow and Twyford, Derbyshire until 1662 when he was ejected, and he was often imprisoned. He died at Findern, Derbyshire and was buried there.
