Robert Frampton was born in Pimperne, Dorset. He was baptized on 26 February 1622. He matriculated at Corpus Christi College, Oxford on 15 December 1637 at the age of fifteen, graduating B.A. from Christ Church on 25 June 1641. A Royalist, he held various posts during the Interregnum, including chaplain for the Levant Company at Aleppo, Syria. In 1666, he returned to England. On 8 July 1673, Frampton was awarded the degree of D.D. He became Rector of Fontmell Magna, Dorset, in 1672, and held this living for thirteen years. In 1673, he became Dean of Gloucester, and was elected as Bishop in 1681. He was also given the living of Avening, Gloucestershire, in 1684. He was deprived of his see on 1 February 1690/1 for refusing to take the oaths of allegiance and supremacy. Frampton died on 25 May 1708 at the age of eighty-six, and was buried at his home at Standish, Gloucestershire. He was a highly regarded preacher throughout his ministerial career, recognized by the likes of John Evelyn, Samuel Pepys, Charles II, and James II.
