Mews, Peter (1619-03-25 - 1706-11-09)

Peter Mews was born at Purse Caundle, Dorset, on 25 March 1619. He studied at Merchant Taylors' School, London and St. John's College, Oxford, graduating B.A. on 13 May 1641 and proceeding M.A. on 21 April 1645. During the Civil Wars and Interregnum, he sided with the Royalists and served as 'Captain Mews'. On 12 September 1660, he became archdeacon of Huntingdon and was awarded the degree of D.C.L. at Oxford in the same year. In 1661, he became Vicar of St. Mary's, Reading, and in 1662, he became Rector of South Warnborough, Hampshire, a post he held until 1668. Mews became Dean of Rochester in 1670. On 19 December 1672, he was elected Bishop of Bath and Wells, and in November 1684, he was appointed to succeed George Morley as Bishop of Winchester. Mews died on 9 November 1706 and was buried in Winchester Cathedral.
