Maynwaring (Manwaring), Roger (1589-03-25 - 1653-06-29)

Roger Maynwaring was born at Stretton, Shropshire, into a Cheshire gentry family. His exact birth date is unknown. He became a bible clerk at All Souls College, Oxford, in 1604, graduating B.A. in February 1608 and proceeding M.A. on 5 July 1611. He was admitted to St Katharine Cree, London as curate six days later. After his resignation, he was instituted as Rector of St Giles in the Fields, London. On 2 July 1625, Maynwaring was awarded the degrees of B.D. and D.D. In July 1627, he preached two sermons before Charles I which were subsequently published as Religion and Alegiance (London, 1627). However, in March 1628, he was condemned for preaching and publishing these controversial sermons by the House of Commons. It is notable that he does not seem to have published any other sermons. Although he was to receive severe punishment for his actions, Charles nevertheless ordered a pardon on 6 July 1628 and presented Maynwaring to the rectory of Stanford Rivers, Essex twelve days later. In 1631, he was presented with the additional rectory of Mugginton, and he was installed as Dean of Worcester on 5 September 1634. Finally, in February 1636, Maynwaring was not only serving as chaplain to the King, but also became Bishop of St David's. Maynwaring died on 29 June 1653 and was buried in Brecon collegiate church.
