John Foxe was born in 1516 in Boston, Lincolnshire. In c. 1534, John Foxe entered Brasenose College, Oxford, graduating B.A. on 17 July 1537 and proceeding M.A. in July 1543. Foxe was ordained as deacon by Nicholas Ridley n on 24 June 1550. After exile under Mary I, he returned to England and completed his magnum opus. Actes and Monuments was printed in March 1563 and dedicated to Elizabeth I. In 1570, he produced his second edition. The third and fourth editions were to appear in 1576 and 1583, respectively. Other publications included a Good Friday sermon entitled 'A Sermon of Christ Crucified' (London, 1570). John Foxe was buried in St Giles Cripplegate on 20 April 1587.
