Henshaw, Joseph (1603-03-25 - 1679-03-09)

Joseph Henshaw was born in 1603. The exact date of his birth is unknown. He matriculated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford on 7 December 1621 at the age of eighteen. He graduated B.A. on 26 February 1624, and was incorporated as M.A. at Pembroke College, Cambridge in 1628. After his ordination, he was appointed as chaplain to Sir John Digby, Earl of Bristol. In 1631, Henshaw published Horae Succesivae (London, 1631), which went through several editions. In 1634, he was presented with the living of Stedham with Heyshott, both in Chichester. He was also appointed as rector of East Lavant in 1636. Henshaw proceeded B.D. and D.D. on 15 December 1635 and 2 July 1639, respectively. During the Civil Wars, Henshaw was ejected from his livings. In the Restoration, Henshaw became Dean of Chichester, and on 10 May 1663, he was consecrated Bishop of Peterborough, a post he held until his death in London on 9 March 1679. Henshaw was buried at East Lavant with his wife and son.
