Vaughan, Richard (1553-03-25 - 1607-03-30)

Born at Dyffryn, Llŷn, Caernarvonshire to Thomas ap Robert Vaughan, ca. 1553. Matriculated from St John's College, Cambridge in 1569; BA, 1574; MA, 1577; DD, 1588/9. Ordained priest in 1577 and was subsequently appointed to the Essex rectories of Chipping Ongar, 1578-1581; Little Canfield, 1580-1591; and Moreton, 1591. His uncle, John Aylmer, bishop of London, helped him gain other other ecclesiastical preferments including prebendary of St. Paul's (London), 1583-1595; archdeacon of Middlesex, 1588-1596; vicar of Great Dunmow, Essex, 1592; Canon of Wells, 1593; rector of Lutterworth, Leicestershire (159?); rector of Stanford Rivers, Essex, 1594. In 1595 he was named bishop of Bangor. Translated to Chester in 1597, where he actively sought to suppress Catholicism, but was lenient towards nonconforming Protestant ministers. then to London in 1604. Assisted William Morgan in a Welsh translation of the Bible, published in 1588. He and his wife Joan had three sons and six daughters. He died of apoplexy on 30 March 1607.
