Born at Southampton ca. 1557, he matriculated as a a scholar of New College, Oxford in 1576; fellow, 1578; graduated BCL, 1584; DCL, 1592. Instituted vicar of Halifax, Yorkshire at the suggestion of Henry, earl of Huntington to help spread Protestant views in a predominantly Catholic region. To that end, he published a polemical work against Rome, Antiquitie Triumphing over Noveltie, in 1619. Made canon of Southwell, 1593; canon of York Minster, 1614, and precentor of York, 1617. Warden of hospital of St Mary Magdalen, Ripon, 1613 to his death 10 March, 1623.
