Born ca. 1545, one of the nine children of Sir Richard Cotton, of Cotton Hall, Warblington, Hampshire. First educated at Guildford grammar school, then entered Magdalen College, Oxford in 1566. BA, 1569; MA, 1572; BD, 1586. Canon of Winchester and rector of Havant, 1577; royal chaplain, 1580; vicar of Wanborough, Wiltshire, 1582-1583; rector of Calbourne, Isle of Wight, 1584-1589; then of Meonstoke, Hampshire, 1589. Bishop of Salisbury, 1598-1615, which led to his creation as DD in 1599. According to Sir John Harrington, his wife was named Patience, and they had nineteen children together. Four sons and three daughters survived to be mentioned in his will. Died 7 May 1615.
