John Pym was born on 20 May 1584. He matriculated at Broadgates Hall, University of Oxford on 18 May 1599, aged 15, but took no degree. He was admitted to the Middle Temple in London in 1602. Pym served as M.P. for Calne and Tavistock during the 1620s, and also in the 1640s until his death at Derby House in Westminster on 8 December 1643. He was given a ceremonial funeral, where his sermon was preached by Stephen Marshall. He was buried under the gravestone of Sir John Wyndsore in the north ambulatory of Westminster Abbey. However, his body was disinterred in the Restoration; his remains were subsequently thrown in a pit in St Margaret's churchyard.
