Born in Glendon, Northamptonshire to Francis Lane, landowner, and his wife Mary Bernard. Matriculated from St John's College, Cambridge in 1673; BA, 1678. Incorporated at Oxford, 1678, and was elected probationer fellow of Merton College in 1679. MA, 1683; proceeded DCL in 1686. Practiced Law at Doctors' Commons. Around this time, he is reputed to have become Catholic and accompanied Irish Catholic nobleman Francis Taaffe to Vienna. Went to Ireland in 1689 to accept a command in James II's army. Wounded and captured at the Battle of the Boyne. Afterwards returned to Merton College and practiced at the Court of Arches. Died sometime in March 1703. His funeral sermon preached 18 March.
