Born in Hoyland, West Riding of Yorkshire, the son of John Kirshaw. Schooled at Halifax Free School, where he was taught by Mr Wood. He matriculated at Christ's College, Cambridge on 23 June 1645 at the age of 17. He then migrated to Oxford, gaining a BA from Brasenose College in 1648 and his MA in 1651. He was rector of Ripley, Yorkshire from 1660. He married Rebecca Sykes, daughter of Richard Sykes, the rector of Kirkheaton and they had a son, Richard (b. 1681). He died sometime in 1684.
