From Selvadge, he graduated MA from St Andrews in 1648. He was admitted to Innerwick, Lothian on 26 January 1654. On 1 October 1662 he was deprived of this living by decree of Privy Council. In 1669 he was granted indulgence and became minister of Paisley, Renfrewshire. In 1673 he was fined half his yearly stipend for not observing the Restoration and in 1684 committed the same offence. On 21 July 1658 he married Margaret Bruce (d. 1684), the daughter of James Bruce, minister of Kingsbarns, Fife. Together they had a son, James, who went on to be a surgeon, and a daughter, Sophia, who married Robert Alexander, the principle clerk of session. He published "Violent the Review: Balm from Gilead" (1681) during his lifetime and left manuscript treatises "De Magistratu" and "On hearing Curates". He died in February or March of 1685 around the age of 57.
